Ochoa earned the Silver Star for gallantry in action on 24 December 1942 near Buna, New Guinea. A dispatch from Allied Headquarters in Australia, printed in the Windsor Daily Star on 3 Apr. ’43, summarized his actions, “Ochoa was decorated for crossing a bridge near Buna December 24 under heavy enemy fire to bring up the remainder of his patrol which had fallen back. He accomplished this mission and later in the same day volunteered to recross the same bridge to inform the commander of the situation. He crossed and returned under heavy fire. “When the order was given to withdraw,” the citation said, “Ochoa started back with the rest of the patrol, but received two wounds which knocked him off the bridge into the water. Oliver earned the Silver Star for gallantry in action on 30 November 1942 near Buna, New Guinea. His citation was summarized in the Arizona Republic on 3 May ’43, “Private Oliver fought forward through heavy enemy mortar and sniper fire near Buna village November 30 to aid a fellow soldier in saving a wounded comrade.” A military press release in the Arizona Republic on 1 Apr. ‘43 stated that he and Pvt. Parks proceeded to a point in advance of our lines and began directing artillery fire on the hostile positions. The enemy concentrated considerable automatic weapons and small arms fire at him, but heedless of his personal danger, he continued with his task until darkness.
