another Soldier from Erie, Charles Crockett, who knew about Clarence’s
brothers and was assigned to the same battalion as Clarence, attempted to
share that information with the Bn. Cdr. while Clarence was on patrol (in an
attempt to have him assigned to less hazardous duties, if not sent home, à la
Saving Pvt. Ryan), unfortunately Clarence was killed by Japanese
machine gun fire during that very patrol; brother served during WWII, S. Sgt.
Charles H., Penn. Nat. Guard, HQ Co., 506TH Para. Inf., 101ST
Abn. Div., KIA 21 Jun. ‘44, shortly after he
